The way I read the passage, the sense of it is this: Do not simply look at things on their face, but look beneath at the other levels of being and meaning in order to have a richer experience of your life.
“Linear judgment,” as I view it, is a reference to only using the linear, logical faculty of mind to explore life, as compared to intuition, creativity and deeper levels of insight.
